Battery Technology in cycleWASH: LiFePO4 Deep Dive
Deep dive into LiFePO4 battery technology — why cycleWASH chose it over standard lithium-ion for safety and 3,000+ cycle lifespan.
Frequently asked questions
Why LiFePO4 instead of Li-ion?
Lifecycle and safety. LiFePO4 delivers 3,000-5,000 charge cycles (vs. 500-1,000 for NMC Li-ion), tolerates full depth of discharge without degradation, and cannot thermal-runaway. For a 10-year outdoor installation, it's the only sensible chemistry.
What's the real cycle-to-empty range?
Our 5.1 kWh pack runs 540 typical wash cycles at 9.5 Wh/cycle before dropping below 20% state-of-charge. With solar recharging, a covered installation runs indefinitely in summer and averages 8-10 cycles/day through Central European winter.
How long before battery replacement?
Expected 12-15 years at our typical usage profile. The warranty covers capacity above 80% for 10 years or 3,000 cycles, whichever comes first. We ship replacement packs as drop-in modules with 15-minute swap time.
What happens at -20°C?
The pack includes active thermal management — a low-power heating element keeps the pack above -5°C even in -30°C ambient. Efficiency drops by 12% below 0°C, but operation continues. Tested at Oulu (Finland) and Longyearbyen (Svalbard) deployments.

Why LiFePO4 Over Standard Lithium-Ion?
We chose Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries for three reasons: safety, longevity, and temperature tolerance. Standard lithium-ion (NMC) cells are prone to thermal runaway — unacceptable for outdoor, unattended equipment.
